DescriptionCluj IT Cluster is an innovative cluster association, a bottom-up initiative founded in October 2012 in Cluj-Napoca (Romania), with over 80 members, 50+ of which are IT companies with more than 4,000 thousand employees and a cumulative turnover of more than 100 million EUR. Cluj IT Cluster includes 8 public universities, being at this moment the cluster that brings together the most numerous and important higher education institutions in Romania: UBB and UTCN (founding members), USAMV Cluj-Napoca, UMF Cluj-Napoca, UAD Cluj-Napoca, but also UNATC Bucharest, University of Oradea and Lucian Blaga University in Sibiu. The Association also includes local authorities (Cluj County Council, Local Council Cluj), Regional Development Agency NW, and other organizations representing various communities established along the value chain of the IT industry (startup communities, co-working and collaboration spaces, gaming communities), including international entities. A bottom-up initiative and the first of its kind in Cluj, the cluster aims to increase the competitiveness and visibility of the Romanian IT industry, as well as to position the NW Region as an innovative digital hub. Cluj IT Cluster acknowledges and creates mechanism to enable the IT sector to successfully collaborate with the academic and research environment and other stakeholders along the industry’s value chain. It also provides a platform where cooperation and innovation are drivers of a planned change which is to move companies from an industry based mainly on outsourcing to proprietary products. Cluj IT Cluster is a founding member of the Balkan, Black Sea and Baltic ICT Network (3B ICT), a network of 17 similar organizations active in the Balkan and Black Sea region, as well as a member of the European Digital SME Alliance and the Romanian Cluster Association (ClusterRo).
